We were privileged, and honoured, to have been invited to help resolve some acoustic issues in the huge Main Hall at Tod College after being allocated some funding from the local town deal. First a little about this is a Mega community venture that is close to our hearts and serves the the townsfolk so very well.

Todmorden Learning Centre and Community Hub is the community group which now runs Tod College. The building, formerly Todmorden Community College, was transferred to the community benefit society from @calderdale council in the Spring of 2021. The transfer came after 5 years of campaigning, and fundraising by the community to saved the building from being bulldozed.

The aim of the centre is to create a community space for the benefit of the people of Todmorden. It now offers a rapidly growing range of provision for local people and community groups including opportunities for learning, sports facilities, office, studio, and workshop spaces.

TLCCH aims to provide local young people with the learning and skills they need for jobs in the new green economy. The college has successfully secured National Lottery funds to set up a Climate Challenge College (CCC) as a faculty within Tod College. The CCC will deliver skills training in natural building, agro-ecology and renewable energy systems.

The room is a vast open space with very little soft furnishing. The walls, ceiling and hard floor are acting as large reflective surfaces for sound. When sound bounces repeatedly between these surfaces you get what are known as 'flutter echoes and reflections' which leads to even more degradation of sound. This was affecting the experience of the many varied users of the hall, from small meetings to large events. Users would hear sound from its origin and then again each time it bounces off a reflective surface. This leads on to volume being increased to fight the echo, which leads to more echo and so on.
 

​We are absolutely chuffed with the end result. They look amazing but more importantly have dramatically, and very noticeably, improved the acoustics in the hall. The feedback from everyone at Tod College has been amazement and appreciation. Awesome.

Sound engineer report conclusion:

Given the above data, I can confidently comment the overall room acoustics have been improved by
57% on average over the whole space and interested frequency range from a view of reverberations
and reflections. Typically, an improvement of 35-40% is deemed satisfactory for a space as
Todmorden Collage Hall – 57% is a highly satisfactory improvement, making the space vastly more
comfortable and functional for events and audio playback.
